Art Africa Miami in December showcases work of contemporary African-American artists

In Miami, the showing of black art has expanded into locations never imaged when Art Basel began in 2001 in Miami Beach. The same year in Miami’s Overtown, local black African-American artists Marvin Weeks and Dinizulu Gene Tinnie mounted a show at the Lyric in the then-newly restored original theater. www.miamiherald.com

Black in Time: African-American visual artists added soul to Art Basel

In Miami, artists outside of the Art Basel inner circle organized across the railroad tracks. Visual artist Marvin Weeks joined Gene Tinnie, Ernest King, Kuumba, and other regional artists who wanted to mount an exhibition in Overtown. The only available venue was the original Lyric Theater www.miamiherald.com

Mural, Mural on the Wall, Who’s the Most Offended One of All?

The realization that this Liberty City icon had been moved to make way for a check-cashing business added a disturbing symbolism. Popular Cash Express hoped to put its front entrance at the spot where the artwork had hung and to move the mural into a position above its new front door. The juxtaposition of the painting and that particular business angered artist Marvin Weeks, who has restored a number of Thomas murals in Overtown and Liberty City. “That is not what Dr. King was about,” Weeks says. Not only does the check-cashing business clash with King’s vision, in Weeks’s mind, but he also questions whether the nonprofit MLK should be leasing retail space to a check-cashing business in the first place.

Enhancing Broadway Arts District

Marvin Weeks, left, and Roy Hardemon, in 2015 photos,  discuss their visions for a revitalized 18th Avenue. Already, colorful murals and mosaic statues have been placed in the area on buildings and in statues on vacant lots near Martin Luther King Boulevard. The men, along with business owners and several organizations say they’re creating the Broadway Arts District, which they hope will rival similar districts in Wynwood and South Beach. Their first Cultural Night Out will be held on Saturday.

MLK Cultural Corridor Mural

Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard is the great pathway through Miami’s cultural rich neighborhood Liberty City, it’s diverse use by motorist, children and neighbors can be it’s great legacy. We want to create a beautiful cultural and educational ecosystem focused around Dr. Charles Drew Middle School. We are painting and constructing a “pathway” mural from NW 17th Ave. to 22 Ave. We want to inspire the children in this community and enhance the resurgence of redevelopment. We are currently working on this project getting ready to showcase it for Art Basel December 2018. The project will include planting flowers, creative lighting and promotion. We need help for artist, paint, suppiles, and promotions. Help make this happen.
